This week, we are kicking off a two part blog series on the impact that cycling can have on your body and your health! Our resident Sports Chiropractor, Jack, has put together the first installment, discussing the amazing benefits of cycling as a sport and fitness activity.
One of the best things about cycling for your health is that it can be a lot of fun. Cycling is a low impact cardiovascular and lower body workout that the whole family can get involved in from a young age. It doesn’t compromise on any compressive forces on the ankles knee or hips joints like running does, which limits the possibility of acute issues and allows those athletes recuperating from injuries a method of safely doing so. There a range of benefits that can really make getting involved in cycling worthwhile!
Cycling Is Inclusive
Cycling can be undertaken by almost any age level and can be a fun whole family workout. Everyone from young kids to those of an advanced age can participate in a daily or weekly ride to increase all levels of fitness.
Cycling works out several systems of your body at the same time
Learning to train and adapting to change is what will improve your ability to ride. The heart is a muscle like any other, and the more you work it, the stronger it gets. Cycling 3 times per week increases cardiac output (the volume of blood your heart can pump in one minute) and reduces your resting heart rate (beats per minute at rest).
Cycling reduces risk factors for heart disease
Lowering your resting heart rate and increasing your cardiac output can reduce the stress on your arteries and leads to less build up of plaques on the internal walls leading to a decreased risk for heart disease.
Cycling Reduces Stress
When it’s just you, the bike and the road, all other stress in your life can dissipate as you set your new time for a ride, or take a corner at a higher speed. Focusing on other goals can take away the stress of a hard week at work, or a favourite sporting team’s loss!
Whichever benefit catches your interest, you can be certain that you’ll find Cycling to be a fulfilling and energetic activity, with the chance to really help your body grow in strength and vitality. As with any type of exercise however, there can be some risks that you need to be aware of. We’ll be covering those next week in the second half of this series!
