Achilles Tendonitis: Causes & Treatment

What is it?

The Achilles tendon is located at the back of the ankle, extending from the calf muscle to the heel bone. It connects the muscles in the leg to the foot and helps facilitate everyday movement such as walking, running or climbing stairs.
Achilles tendonitis occurs when the Achilles tendon becomes inflamed or swollen. Although the tendon can withstand everyday pressure placed through the lower body, tendonitis can occur when the tendon is placed through excessive stress. Tendonitis is generally caused by overuse and if left untreated, can result in the thickening of the tela (tissue) which may take longer to treat.

How can Live Active Help?

At Live Active, we recommend that if you believe you have Achilles tendonitis or you are waiting to see one of our podiatrists, you should refrain for participating in the activity that may have caused it.
There are also a number of other factors which may contribute to Achilles tendonitis such as improper shoe selection, inadequate stretching prior to sport, a short Achilles tendon, direct trauma, training errors or biomechanically inefficient feet.
Treatment at Live Active may include strengthening, shockwave, orthotics, dry needling, laser or deep tissue massage and taping.
